Clay minerals are among the smallest particles found in soil. What is special about these clay minerals is the combination of their shape and composition. They consist of many thin platelets. The result of this is that they have a very large surface area per unit weight. For the Bentonite clay mineral this can amount to up to 800 m2 per gram, for comparison the most common clay mineral in the Netherlands (Illiet) has a maximum of 150 m2 per gram.

In addition, the clay minerals are electrically charged at the edges due to their chemical composition. This charge is always neutralized by ions in the soil. This means that clay minerals have a great ion binding capacity. Because of these properties, clay minerals can play an important role in soil fertility.

The high adsorption (binding) capacity of the clay minerals has an important function. The clay minerals ensure that many ions (K, Ca, Mg, Na, NH4) and trace elements are bound and are only released again when the concentration of one of these elements in the soil decreases. Clay minerals ensure a constant supply of all kinds of nutrients. Nitrates are not directly bound by clay minerals, but the improved structure of the soil means there is less chance that nitrate can leach out.
